2016 Charteris The Hunt Riesling
"Owners Peter James (PJ) Charteris and partner Christina Pattison met at Brokenwood in the Hunter Valley in 1999. PJ was the chief executive winemaker at Brokenwood, and Christina was the marketing manager. Together they have over four decades of winemaking and wine marketing experience. In 2008 they launched their boutique brand For NZ-born PJ, finding a top Pinot Noir site in Central Otago New Zealand was a spiritual homecoming. They also have a vineyard with the gold-plated address of Felton Road, Bannockburn, planted to clones 115 777 and Abel. Currently the mouse (small production) that roared but who knows what the future holds!" James Halliday
What The Critics Say
Winemaker notes on current 2016 vintage
"Subtle floral perfume, more citrus blossom, and the almost tactile smell of windblown Greywacke silt. The faintest lift of crushed Kaffir Lime leaf gives a sense of aromatic infinity. Lime, limes and more limes flood the entry of this wine. Then there’s the build of weight and resonance, acidity playing with phenolics playing with extract. Pithy and crunchy acidity with a silky glide of texture drive juicy length and persistence. While quite thirst quenching, be careful because I think the moreish-ness of this wine can only lead to a second bottle. The wine requires not so much as a food match but a food experience. Get in Boat, Find Kingfish, Catch Kingfish, Celebrate with glass of Riesling, prepare Kingfish Sashimi and Ceviche, Drink more Riesling, Enjoy!"
