Nelson's famous Moutere clay soils give us another ridiculously good Blackenbrook Pinot Gris. Just off-dry with beautiful peachy pear fruit against mineral acidity, heaps of texture and a backbone that is rounded by a small portion that sees old oak. Wildly over-invested and 'serious' for the price, this Blackenbrook is proper stuff and rare in retail.

Pinot Gris

Its Origins

Quality wines start in the vineyard. It was with that clear vision that Daniel and Ursula Schwarzenbach moved to the top of the South Island in 1998 and searched for land for almost two years, before purchasing their 20ha block in Tasman on the scenic Coastal Highway.

The gentle north-facing slope, the Moutere clay soils and the mild maritime climate were immediately appealing. In the winter of 2000 they grafted their own vines to plant the first 4ha of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir in the following winter. Over the years they added Riesling, Gewürztraminer and the Italian red variety Montepulciano into the mix. Born in Switzerland but living in New Zealand since age 9, Daniel began his career as a medical chemist and microbiologist in NZ and the UK, before deciding that winemaking was the path he wanted to go down. He is committed to sustainable/organic winemaking, with very few additions/adjustments made to the wines themselves.

What The Critics Say

94/100 Cameron Douglas MS

"Ripe, almost powerful with an intensely fruity core contrasted with layers of spice and tropical fruit flowers. Just dry with a medley of white fleshed fruits suggesting pears and sweet apple, some gingery spices, medium+ acidity and long finish. There’s a phenolic texture back palate adding length, tension and complexity. A delicious wine, best enjoyed with food." Drink 2020 - 2024

93/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

"Youthfully charming and elegantly expressed, the inviting bouquet shows fresh pear, rockmelon, apple and blossom aromas, followed by a succulent palate that is soothing and expansive. The wine offers terrific fruit weight and persistency, making it immediately appealing. At its best: now to 2024. $25.00. www.blackenbrook.co.nz. Oct 2019." Drink 2019 - 2024

4 Stars Michael Cooper

"Estate-grown and hand-harvested, the 2018 vintage (4*) was handled in a mix of tanks (90 per cent) and old oak barrels (10 per cent). Floral and finely textured, it's a medium-dry style (8 grams/litre of residual sugar), full-bodied, with fresh pear, lychee and spice flavours, showing excellent delicacy and depth. Best drinking mid-2019." Drink 2018 - 2022
