2023 Forrest Petit Manseng

94 Points Cameron Douglas MS
In stock
A remarkable white wine for aperitif or lighter desserts made from a very, very rare variety in New Zealand. Petit Manseng is a grape from southwest France that performs the delicate balancing act of ripening very late (sometimes in June) while keeping its fresh, bright acidity. The result is wine that finishes dry(ish) but is richly ripe and complex on the palate. Try this!

Its Origins

Forrest wines was started in 1988 by doctors John and Brigid Forrest, focused on planting in Marlborough’s Renwick but including some expansion to joint venture Cornerstone in Hawkes Bay’s Gimblett Gravels. Though Brigid is a medical rather than scientific doctor, she was and is equally involved in the envisioning and running of this hands-on operation. Nonetheless, John’s immense energy and former doctorate in molecular biochemistry has made him not only one of the most well-known but technically expert of New Zealand winemakers. Experimental too, as today the sprawling Forrest range explores many terroirs, mainly in Marlborough, while taking credit in the ‘Doctor’s’ range for early ventures into new varieties such as Arneis and Gruner Veltliner, as well as successful naturally low alcohol styles of Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc.

What The Critics Say

94/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2019 Vitnage)

"Lovely aromatics, varietal and intense. Layers of peach and elderflower, acacia and ripe red apple then honeysuckle. No mistaking the residual sweetness on the palate which is immediately contrasted by high acidity and flavours of fresh white and tropical fruits. Great texture and length - an excellent food wine. Totally smashable."

90/100 Bob Campbell MW (2019 Vintage)

"Quite sweet (81 g/l residual sugar), but the sweetness is restrained by knife-edged acidity to give a moderately dry finish. Tropical fruits, green mango, floral and citrus flavours. The wine builds a pleasing sweet-and-sour tension. 30 APR 2020." Drink 2020 - 2028
