Gewurtztraminer

Its Origins

Located in arguably New Zealand's most exciting wine region of North Canterbury (more specifically, Waipara), albeit sparsely scattered with wine estates it is at the forefront of interesting and unique wines in NZ. This is due in part to a fabulous free-draining, well protected terroir. Pegasus Bay is run by the Donaldson family who were pioneers in the region and have been involved with local grape growing and winemaking since the 1970's. The whole family are involved in the process from grape to bottle, and a deep respect for the land, with a long term view towards vine and soil health typifies the Donaldson Family's approach to grape growing. Pegasus Bay is an accredited member of the NZWG sustainable viticulture program and are firm believers of using natural methods to combat pests and diseases rather than the application of unnecessary pesticides and herbicides.

What The Critics Say

Winemaker notes on current 2021 vintage

"On release the wine has a bright lemon tone. Exotic and perfumed, the nose is an enchanting patchwork of floral, tropical and spicy fragrances. Impressions of roses, honeysuckle, and wildflower cascade from the glass, flecked with pineapple, ginger, nutmeg and Turkish delight, along with a whisp of barrel flint. Due to the varietal intensity of Gewürz, some additional winemaking techniques have been employed to give the wine extra complexity. Skin contact and fermenting with solids provide increased structure and a subtle hint of struck match, while the oak aging and lees contact adds mouth feel. The palate is textural and weighty, framed with ripe phenolics and mellow acidity that balance the wine. A touch of bittersweet apricot kernel compliments its off dry style, adding length and prolonging the finish."

94/100 Bob Campbell MW (2016 vintage)

"Moderately dry, weighty and complex gewürztraminer with appealing floral, Turkish Delight, tropical fruits, spice and a honeyed botrytis influence. Sweetness is balanced by fine, dry tannins that leave a trace of bitterness on the finish. Impressive wine with development potential."

94/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim (2017 vintage)

"It's splendidly fruited and richly expressed on the nose showing golden peach, mango, lychee and orange peel aromas with nuances of Turkish Delight, flint and fragrant spice. The palate offers terrific fruit power and intensity together with velvety mouthfeel and elegant sweetness backed by refreshing acidity, making it irresistibly delicious. At its best: now to 2025. $30.00. www.pegasusbay.com. Jan 2020."
