2020 Coopers Creek SV Limeworks Chardonnay

94 Points Sam Kim

A great discount on classic Hawkes Bay Chardonnay. It is broad and powerful but also has a chalky freshness from the limestone in the name (it is grown next to Webster's limeworks in Hawkes Bay). A quiet legend, this offering from Cooper's Creek overdelivers on concentration and quality for a very reasonable price. No wonder our customers love it!

Its Origins

Founded in 1980 by Andrew and Cynthia Hendry when the New Zealand wine industry was small and relatively unknown, Coopers Creek Vineyard has grown and matured over three decades into a top class winery with a strong international presence. It continues to innovate, particularly with new wine styles, introducing and pioneering promising new grape varieties that are ideal for cool climate regions. Viognier, Albariño, Arneis, Grüner Veltliner, Marsanne and Montepulciano are new varieties for New Zealand, but heading for stardom. Coopers Creek is satisfying a growing demand for these stylish varieties in addition to its longstanding pedigree with Chardonnay, Syrah and Bordeaux reds.

What The Critics Say

94/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

"Wonderfully composed and stylish, the wine shows nectarine, fig, vanilla and roasted cashew notes on the nose, followed by a concentrated palate displaying excellent weight and depth. It’s richly textured and complex with an impressively long delectable finish. At its best: now to 2025. $25.00. www.cooperscreek.co.nz. Jan 2021." Drink 2021 - 2025

91/100 Wine-Pages.com, Tom Cannavan (2019 vintage)

"From the Limeworks block, this was fermented and spent around 11 months in oak barrels (20% of which was new American oak). Cashew, crushed almond and oatmeal on the nose, there's a generosity and inviting ripeness to this, only 12.5% alcohol, but a peachy fruit character as well as lime. On the palate the oak is very nicely handled, just adding a nutty and creamy flavour and texture, but the freshness and poise of the fruit is elegant and quite delicious."

93/100 Bob Campbell MW (2018 vintage)

"Reasonably weighty chardonnay with peach, chalky-mineral, lime zest and subtle spicy oak flavours. A smooth-textured wine, with a vibrant thread of thrilling acidity promoting a mouth-cleansing finish. Excellent value 28 AUG 2019." Drink 2019 - 2024
