2019 Lime Hill Wairarapa Chardonnay

98 Points Raymond Chan
In stock
A sophisticated Chardonnay from the lime-clay hillsides of Wairarapa. Like its Pinot stablemate, this super-elegant white benefits from ideal soils and elevated aspect to produce a weighty but refined, beautifully handled Burgundy style. With deep citrus nuanced by harmonious mineral and mealy notes, this new Chardonnay is delicious now and will be for a good few years.

Its Origins

"Lime Hill Vineyard is the joint wine venture of Karl Johner of Johner Estate at Gladstone with his winemaker Raphael Burki. The small vineyard is close-planted to a density of 6,000 vines per ha, on limestone soil with a thin layer of clay topsoil, and has 0.4 ha of predominantly Mendoza clone Chardonnay and 0.9 ha of Pinot Noir, clones, 667, 777, 115, 10/5, Abel and 5, established in 2013. The hillside vineyard, east of Masterton sits at 280 m.a.s.l. and clearly designed to follow the burgundy model." -- Raymond Chan

What The Critics Say

98/100 Raymond Chan- Candice Chow

"Bright, pale yellow-gold with some depth, slightly lighter edged. The nose is elegant and refined, nuances of citrus, stonefruit melded with crunchy minerals, toasted almonds and oak spice elements. Medium-bodied on a fine, sleek mineral line; aromas of stonefruit intermix citrus, grapefruit zest have concentration; unveiling well-proportioned oak elements presented in spices and mouthfeel elegantly, along with a touch of creaminess. Chalky mineral mouthfeel left a fine coating on the palate along with lively acid precision to a long lingering finish. This is a mineral-driven Chardonnay with well-proportioned citrus, stonefruit and oak element, persistence and elegancy. Match with scampi and clams risotto over the next 6-8 years. 13% alc. 19.5/20 pts (98 pts) Jan 2021"
