This rich Tempranillo from Callejo is a beautiful example – rich, oaky and structured with fine tannins. Full body reflects this Ribera Del Douro climate – and the wood characters from twelve full months' oak – but the full fruit retains spice and floral nuance that makes this a very complete, mouth-filling and serious Spanish red. From one of Spain's foremost producers, this is a serious food wine for the price.

Its Origins

The Felix Callejo family has been growing grapes for 4 generations with little changes. Organic grapes are still carefully tended, selected and handpicked. The family owns 60 hectares in Sotillo de la Ribera, the very heart of Ribera del Duero, planted with some of the best vines in the region. The age of the vines range from 25 to 60 years. Yields are limited naturally by the hard continental climate and a poor soil of low fertility. On top of that Jose Felix, the winemaker does an strict green pruning and selection, an average of only 8 bunches are allowed per plant.

What The Critics Say

90/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Luis Gutierrez (2014 vintage)

"The 2014 Callejo Crianza is a ripe and oaky Tempranillo from the village of Sotillo de la Ribera, aged for one year in French barrels. It has plenty of sweet spices and smoky notes intermixed with plums and black berries and some hints of freshness, orange peel and perhaps flowers in the background. The palate has abundant, dusty tannins and a lot of oak-related flavors. Very good in its oaky style. 90,000 bottles produced." Drink 2017 – 2020

91/100 Vinous, Josh Raynolds (2011 vintage)

"(aged for a year in French oak): Opaque ruby. Pungent aromas of dark berries, mocha, licorice and peppery spices, with a smoky nuance building in the glass. Sappy and expansive on the palate, offering sweet black raspberry and cracked pepper flavors and a hint of bitter chocolate. Finishes supple and spicy, with gentle framing tannins that fade slowly into the wine's fruit."
