"Three Dark Horses is the new project for former Coriole winemaker Matt Broomhead. After vintages in southern Italy (2007) and the Rhone Valley he returned to McLaren Vale in late 2009 and, with his father Alan, buys quality grapes, thanks to the long experience they both have in the region. The third dark horse is Matt's grandfather, a vintage regular. But things are changing. In Nov '17 the business acquired a 5ha vineyard in McLaren Vale, and will build an onsite winery. They are expanding the plantings with grenache blanc, clairette and touriga nacional, and reworking some of the shiraz vines planted in 1964. Part of the vineyard is sand soil-based interspersed with ironstone, a highly desirable mix for shiraz and cabernet sauvignon." -- James Halliday
What The Critics Say
Winemaker notes on current 2018 vintage
"From a single vineyard, Schuller Rd, Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale with a vine age of 20 -50 years. 100% basket pressed, 7 day open ferment with regular pump overs. 10-15% whole bunch inclusion. 12 months in new (40%), 2 year old (30%) and 3 year old (30%) French oak. Bottled without fining or filtration.
Dense and expressive. Aromas of forest berries, all spice and musk. Flavours of blackberry, plum and chocolate. Some spice and a touch of earth. Soft and rich with a plush mid-palate. Gentle but persistent tannin giving it flow and a long, even finish. Cellaring potential: 6 to 8+ years."
95/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim (2017 vintage)
"A hugely appealing shiraz; the gorgeous bouquet shows blackberry, Black Doris plum, vanilla, cedar, warm spice and floral notes. The palate delivers excellent fruit concentration and intensity, wonderfully complemented by velvety mouthfeel and silky tannins. It is substantial and opulent, while remaining properly balanced and structured with a persistent satisfying finish. At its best: now to 2027. AU$25.00. www.3dh.com.au. Dec 2018."
