2021 Martinborough Vineyards Te Tera Pinot Noir

93 Points Bob Campbell MW

A nice price on one of our customers favourite pinots because it always over delivers. The 2021 is no exception scoring a 93/100 from Bob Campbell, 93-94 from Cameron Douglas and Gold Medal at the Aoteroa Show. Te Tera is made from a selection of their quality home-grown fruit. The resulting wine shows the expertise of an estate that was first to plant Pinot in Martinborough. Ripe and savoury but with nice freshness, this is a serious drop to decant now or age a while... if you can keep it in the bottle!

Its Origins

Free-draining soils, hot summers and long, dry autumns make Martinborough the perfect region for growing traditional cool-climate wines. Founded in 1980, Martinborough Vineyard was a trailblazer in the region and the first to plant the variety for which the region is best known, Pinot Noir. MV now lay claim to the oldest Pinot Noir vines in the district. Since the first vintage was released by pharmacist-turned-winemaker Russell Schultz in 1984, they have consistently produced world-class wines from the home block, Martinborough Terraces blocks, and more recently, the Burnt Spur vineyards. A big move towards organic/sustainable vineyards is currently in place.

What The Critics Say

93/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Weighty, textural wine that is deliciously drinkable now but should respond positively to a little bottle age"

93-94 Cameron Douglas MS

"Vivid aromas of dark cherry and blacy plums, anise and moderately toasty barrel scents, there’s adelicate lifted clay soil quality adding complexity and intensity. Fruity, plush and ripe, fresh and dry, fine velevty tannins with a chalky texture, plenty of acidity and core fruit flavours that reflect the bouquet. Delicious, youthful, taut and dry. A wine for the cellar or to accompany food. Best drinking from early 2024 through 2029+. A wine that punches well above its weight presenting excellent value."
