2023 Neudorf Tom's Block Moutere Pinot Noir

The Tom's block is quiet icon in Kiwi Pinot. It is grown on the Moutere clays before being fermented with wild yeast, with a little new oak, and bottled unfined and unfiltered. An inexpensive glimpse of the savoury-mineral depths of Neudorf's famous Moutere label, the Tom's Block is a very serious Pinot for the price. Drink now or cellar.

Its Origins

Nelson is the sunniest viticultural region in New Zealand. Relatively isolated, it has never developed into large scale production but several wineries have established an excellent reputation for quality. Prime amongst these is Neudorf, created by pioneers Tim & Judy Finn back in the late 1970s. The winery buildings have developed steadily since 1980, and so has the reputation of this excellent producer specialising predominantly in chardonnay and pinot noir. Their flagship wines are designated by the subregion of Moutere. The Neudorf estate, lying on a mix of glacial outwash clay, now represents 12ha, though buys in fruit from a further 30ha (of managed vineyards). The viticulture is sustainable "lutte raisonnée" with organic practices being introduced since 2008. The wines are all made with minimal intervention; hand harvesting, wild yeast, low S02 and soft, supporting oak.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Bob Campbell MW (2021 vintage)

"Serious pinot noir with cassis, dark cherry, anise/spice, plum, dark chocolate, and nutty oak flavours. Although it can be appreciated now this wine is built to last for more than a decade. 25 JAN 2023."

94/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2021 vintage)

"Vibrant, varietal and enticing bouquet with aroma sof fresh dark skinned cherries, a natural spice and black currant leaf. There’s a layer of stone and clay mineral with moderate oak spice scents. Dry on the palate with a core of red berries and plums, spices from wood and soil framed by fresh youthful tannisn and medium_ acidity. Lovely length and poise. Best drinking from late 2023 through 2029."

16.5/20 Jancis Robinson (2021 vintage)

"Transparent blueish crimson. Pure, peppery, confident fruity aromas that are very much its own character rather than a copy of red burgundy. Something quite dry on the finish rather than sweet but appetising! Good food wine. Notably firm but not excessive tannins on the end. I'd say this is rather a defiant wine that is determined to go its own way. Good persistence and not that much hurry to drink it."
