2021 Symington Altano Douro (Red Label)

90 Points Richard Caro
In stock
A nice discounted red from the portfolio of the Symingtons, who are known for famous ports such as Grahams and Dows. Over half the Douro makes dry red wines, and this delicious example comes from the steep terraces along the side of that harsh River Valley. Low yields and old vines produce wines of remarkable quality with sweet, ripe berry and black cherry aromatics with notes of liqourice and violet. Delicious and different, the Altano is great value.

Its Origins

Five generations of the Symington family have been at home in the Douro Valley for more than 130 years. Symington Family Estates is the most awarded wine producer in the last 25 years, and they are the leading winegrowers and premium Port producers in the Douro Valley.

What The Critics Say

Wine Spectator (previous vintage)

"Wild plum and berry flavours are concentrated and well rounded in this balanced, fresh-tasting red, which shows hints of chocolate on the finish."

Financial Times, Jancis Robinson (previous vintage)

"Port producers Symington's table wine, based on Tinta Roriz, improves with every vintage. Sweet blackberry fruit laced with pepper and spice. Fine, dry texture. Even quite elegant."

Wine Enthusiast (previous vintage)

"A forward, fruity wine that shows ripe black-currant fruit. It does have the stricture that comes from the tough soils of the Douro, but this is balanced by the acidity, juicy fruitiness and ripe tannins."
