A step up from the standard Etna, this varietal label is a lusher, richer-fruited expression of this complex grape and terroir. High in the volcanic 'black lands' of Sicily's Mt Etna, the local Nerello Mascalese ripens long and slow into beautifully plump and defined dark fruits, while capturing the subtle savoury and mineral background yielded by these distinctive soils. Silky yet layered and subtly complex, the 1614 is a serious delight.

Nerello Mascalese

Its Origins

"Diego Planeta, along with Giacomo Rallo of Donnfugata and Lucio Tasca d’Almerita, is one of the three founding fathers of the “Sicilian wine renaissance” sparked 10 to 15 years ago. Cousins Francesca, Santi and Alessio Planeta hold the reigns to the estate today and have developed one of the most innovative and modern wine entities in Italy (they are among the most “liked” wineries on Facebook). The Planeta family boasts a gifted hand in marketing and their hard work has only helped to develop the “Sicily” brand within the many foreign markets they penetrate." Parker's Wine Advocate, Monica Larner

What The Critics Say

17.5/20 Jancis Robinson (2014 vintage)

"This was bottled in May but will not be released before November 2016. Deep ruby. Serious, cool nose of raspberry and iron. A little smoky too. Compact palate that is a little tight, yet supple and neat. Subdued oak note. Firm tannins on the finish. Something to cellar. (WS)." Drink 2018 - 2028

92/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Monica Larner (2014 vintage)

"The 2014 Sicilia Nerello Mascalese Eruzione 1614 is a drier and more mineral-driven expression compared to its peers. The bouquet delivers an immediate and wide array of volcanic characteristics with ash and crushed-sulfur stone. The mouthfeel is linear and tight with fine tannins that are silky and long in terms of mouthfeel. The wine is excellent, but I am surprised by the subdued presence of primary fruit in a vintage like 2014 that is recognized for its exuberant blackberry and black currant aromas. I am assigning a slightly shorter drinking window as a result." Drink 2017 - 2024
