After a false start, we plan to kick off the year's tastings programme as we mean to continue – with another delicious tour of a favourite region. In this case it is focused on Barolo, as seen in the amazing new labels from Arnaldo Rivera.

Hosted by John Caro, tasters will hear tell of many great wines and vineyards. But the producer itself is a fascinating story about post-war Barolo – and an incredible value proposition that was long overlooked in the region's rustic background.

Arnaldo Rivera was a much beloved local major who established the now seventy-year old collective, Terre del Barolo, as a way of bringing security to the region’s scattered and impoverished small growers. In the end, it was by being scattered that these families ended up adding value to their wares. Because their family holdings were sometimes located in what are now the most hallowed vineyards in the world!

But the region’s reputation was slow to rise, and it was not for more than fifty years (in the vintage of 2013) that the Terre del Barolo was able to properly showcase these treasured assets – and to emulate their successful neighbours, Produttori del Barbaresco – by releasing what would instantly become the reference point range in cru Barolo bottlings.

When ancient local knowledge meets state-of-the-art winemaking and soaring global demand, pretty much everyone is happy with the results. But the most unique aspect of this Rivera range is the way it will allow John to reveal – from the hand of a single winemaker, and in a single warm vintage – the many distinct and subtle manifestations of greatness that these labels convey from across almost all of Barolo’s most important villages.

After sampling Rivera’s $60 regional blend “Undicicommuni”, the cru wines to be tasted are:

2015 Arnaldo Rivera Barolo Boiolo (from the village of La Morra) $105
2015 Arnaldo Rivera Barolo Bussia (Monforte D’Alba) $105
2015 Arnaldo Rivera Barolo Castello (Grinzane Cavour) $105
2015 Arnaldo Rivera Barolo Monvigliero (Verduno) $105
2015 Arnaldo Rivera Barolo Ravera (Novello) $105
2015 Arnaldo Rivera Barolo Vigna Rionda (Serralunga D’Alba) $145
2015 Arnaldo Rivera Barolo Rocche di Castiglione (Castiglione Falletto) $145
