2020 Massolino Barolo
Grape
Nebbiolo
Its Origins
Massolino are among the foremost Barolo producers, with deep history in Serralunga d'Alba. Giovanni Massolino founded the estate in 1896 and was also the first to bring electricity to his village. Son Guiseppe and daughter Angela were likewise ahead of their time, in 1934 extending holdings in what are now regarded as some of Barolo's best crus - Margheria, Parafada and Vigna Rionda. Whilst channelling their tradition, Massolino also utilise the heavier clay soils of Serralunga to bring a satisfying breadth, density and structure to their Barolo’s - which, balanced against their extreme refinement and expressive clarity - make them almost incomparable for the price.
What The Critics Say
94/100 James Suckling
"Bright and lively red fruit character with dried flowers, stones and hints of tree resin. Medium-bodied, clean and focused on the palate, with fine tannins and a linear finish. Shows freshness and poise. Polished. Try from 2027, but already a joy to taste."
93/100 Kerin O’Keefe
“The fragrant 2020 Massolino straight Barolo is smooth, savory and already accessible, featuring flavors of strawberry compote, blood orange and licorice. Lithe, refined tannins and fresh acidity keep it balanced. Drink through 2030.”
17+/20 JancisRobinson.com, Walter Speller
“Lustrous mid ruby. Richness of fruit on the nose with a hint of gingerbread. With aeration opens up to savoury cherry, if still a little subdued. Supple, suave cherry fruit with superfine, long, chewy tannins. A pretty wine." Drink 2024 - 2032
