Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is Northern Italy’s answer to Burgundy. Still largely grown in its native home around Piedmont, the name may come from the Italian word for noble - a very apt description - or it may come from the fog (‘nebbia’) that cloaks these foothills of the Alps. Nebbiolo ripens slowly in this cool climate and so develops impressive depth and complexity. With naturally high acid and tannins it responsible for the famous cellaring wines Barolo and Barbaresco but also delicious varietal labels that drink younger but still have the the umami feel and signature notes of tar and flowers. Dry and usually full bodied, we recommend drinking Nebbiolo sitting down…preferably in front of some richly carniverous dish.
