This Argentinian red is plush, mouth-filling and spicy thanks to the legendary technique of French winemaker-consultant Michel Rolland. Local Malbec provides ample bright, silky fruit while Bordeaux varieties and Syrah give background density, complexity and spine. With proper depth and lots of charm, this wine offers the rare combination of satisfaction and sophistication.

Its Origins

Never slow off the mark, legendary French consultant Michel Rolland spotted Argentina coming a mile off. Way back in 1998 he and Pomerol winegrower Jean-Michel Arcaute secured a prime spot in Menzoda’s Uco Valley, up 1,100 metres in the cool semi-desert plains under the snow-capped Andes. Rolland was soon joined on this Vista Flores property by seven other Bordeaux-based investors, and four different bodegas were built to house the various interests. While each bodega produces their own labels, the Clos de Los Siete (or ‘Garden of the Seven’) is made by Rolland but represents their shared vision and is sourced from a joint vineyard of varied crop - with some Bordeaux varietals and Syrah but dominated by the Argentinian star grape, Malbec. As a wine the Clos perfectly reflects its origins and story: the brightness and aromatic definition of alpine Malbec is balanced against the denser, more complex spine provided by ‘noble’ French varietals, while this perfectly rounded package is delivered in Rolland’s famously defined, harmonious and seamless style.

What The Critics Say

90/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Luis Gutierrez

"2015 was the first of the rainy El Niño vintages, which resulted in some challenges for the Valle de Uco, where the grapes for the 2015 Clos de Los Siete red blend are grown. The blend changes with the year and is decided by tasting, but it's always more than 50% Malbec complemented with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Petit Verdot. Thirty percent of the wine remains unoaked to keep the freshness, and the rest matured in first, second and third use barriques for 11 to 12 months. This is a regular and harmonious wine with a commercial profile, approachable, polished and sleek. The palate is medium to full-bodied with round, lush tannins and clean flavors. 780,000 bottles produced." Drink 2018 - 2021

Vinous, Stephen Tanzer

"Medium ruby-red. An element of spicy oak lifts the aromas of black cherry, dark berries, licorice and herbs. Supple and fine-grained, offering good energy for its elevated pH. The flavors of dark berries, menthol, licorice and herbs lead to a finish that's a bit greener than that of the 2014. The tannins spread out to coat the palate but are slightly dusty and dry. Late notes of bitter chocolate and herbs.(14.5% alcohol; this wine carries a high pH of 3.95, higher than the 2014 version, which was still quite youthful in April and will benefit from another year of cellaring; aged in French oak, one-third new)." Drink 2019 - 2023
