A suave and modern version of this classic Sicilian red. Cerasuolo di Vittoria has a distinguished history and remains the only Sicilian wine recognised by Italy's highest DOCG status. The name Cerasuolo describes the 'cherry-like' nature of this aromatic style, where the local Frappato grape gives the red fruit and fresh mineral acidity while the Nero D'Avola frames it with a touch of colour and structure. Like its northern neighbour Etna, Cerasuolo has lately won kudos from international connoisseurs for its Burgundy-like poise, structure and aromatic appeal. This charming entry-priced example is really beautiful value.

Its Origins

"Diego Planeta, along with Giacomo Rallo of Donnfugata and Lucio Tasca d’Almerita, is one of the three founding fathers of the “Sicilian wine renaissance” sparked 10 to 15 years ago. Cousins Francesca, Santi and Alessio Planeta hold the reigns to the estate today and have developed one of the most innovative and modern wine entities in Italy (they are among the most “liked” wineries on Facebook). The Planeta family boasts a gifted hand in marketing and their hard work has only helped to develop the “Sicily” brand within the many foreign markets they penetrate." What The Critics Say

Winemaker notes

"An intriguing wine with an extraordinary vital energy based on wild fruits, wild strawberries, mulberry and pomegranate. An extremely gastronomic version of Cerasuolo which we like very much for its meaty peppery notes. In the mouth the wine reflects its olfactory impressions and thus we happily re-encounter the black pepper mixed with carob and sweet cherries. Quick on the palate with a very savoury rounded finish with hints of mulberry. In the right season, perfect with a slice of seared tuna, with chopped mushrooms or with feathered game, its harmony with pizza is a surprise throughout the year. to drink at once or to keep for 6/8 years."

90/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Monica Larner (2016 vintage)

"The 2016 Cerasuolo di Vittoria is lean in texture and bright in aromas. The historic blend is 60% Nero d'Avola and 40% Frappato. Wild strawberry aromas rise to the top, followed by bitter almond and rose petal. However, if I were to settle on one word (okay, two words) to describe the bouquet, they would be: wild cherry."
