2018 Rod McDonald Quarter Acre Merlot/ Cabernet

Grape
43% merlot, 39% cabernet sauvignon, 14% malbec and 4% cabernet franc
Its Origins
Rod McDonald earned his chops over thirteen years in Hawkes Bay, nine of them with Villa Maria’s Vidal’s Estate. On the back of winning New Zealand Winemaker of the Year in 2006 Rod went out on his own, consulting for other wineries and starting his own somewhat rambling portfolio of brands, most of which are gaining significant recognition in their respective categories. The ‘Te Awanga’ range is sourced from the ‘home’ vineyards, located at the cellar door site. ‘Quarter Acre’ is a step up into single vineyard wines exploring sub-regional terroir. With beautiful wine styling as well as obvious advantages in sourcing quality juice, the confidence and swagger of Rod McDonald wines seems to be nothing if not justified.
What The Critics Say
93/100 Bob Campbell MW
"A blend of 43% merlot, 39% cabernet sauvignon, 14% malbec and 4% cabernet franc. Mellow, fruity red with blackberry, raspberry, violet and spicy oak flavours. A ripe and appealing wine that's accessible now but no rush 07 NOV 2019." Drink 2019 - 2025
91/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Joe Czerwinski
"Aromas of tobacco, black cherries and cassis emerge on the nose of the 2018 Quarter Acre Section, a blend of 43% Merlot, 39% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Malbec and 4% Cabernet Franc. It's a pretty classic Bordeaux-styled blend, being medium-bodied, nicely proportioned and structured, with hints of toasty oak in the background and ripe, velvety tannins that linger on the finish. It should drink well for at least 6-7 years." Drink 2020 - 2027
