2018 Man O' War Waiheke Ironclad Merlot Cabernets

95 Points Bob Campbell MW
In stock
An intense and "dramatic" Bordeaux blend from Waiheke legends, Man O' War. With Merlot and Cabernet Franc leading three other grapes, the palate is full and plush as well as complex, toasty and spicy. Huge depth as well as eminent class and style make this another terribly satisfying and charismatic Man O' War, to drink now or cellar.
$47.99 in mixed 6+ or $52.99 per bottle

Usually a blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon

Its Origins

First planted in 1993, at the eastern end of Waiheke Island, Man O’ War consists of 150 acres of vines planted in 76 individual hillside blocks, each with a distinct soil profile and microclimate.
Every single block bears the footprints, and sometimes the names, of those who transformed Man O’ War’s rugged hillsides into a spectacular patchwork of vines. Helmed by winemaker Duncan McTavish and vineyard manager Matt Allen, the wines represent a legacy of preservation and great respect for the land and its history.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Bob Campbell MW

"A blend of cabernet franc, merlot, petit verdot and cabernet sauvignon. Bold, intense and youthful wine with strong cherry and berry, plum, dried fruits, spices, liquorice, dark chocolate and cedar flavours. Impressive now but with obvious cellaring potential 14 JUL 2021." Drink 2021 - 2039

93/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2017 vintage)

"Really decent bouquet of dark berries and plums, blackberries and cocoa, violet and wood smoke, marmite and toasty wood. On the palate - weighty, rich, fruity, woody and tasty. Flavours reflect the nose with the plums and dark berries, dark brown spices of oak and toasty wood, a vanilla and clove layer. Firm tannins, medium+ acidity, great balance and length. A classic M-O-War wine. Drink now and through 2023."
