2019 Ch. Canon St Emilion
En Primeur product: order now for arrival mid 2022. A superb vintage for this revered St Emilion Chateau, which is of 1er Grand Cru Classé (B) status. Occupying limestone and loam soils that are centred on the plateau near the town, the estate and vineyards represent the heart of St Emilion in an almost geographical sense. A true legend, Canon is among those wines that presents great Merlot in such depth and ripeness that it is transformed into a priceless delicacy. To remove foreign exchange risk for our customers, listed prices are all up final landed cost including GST. Payment is due on invoice/order placement, with delivery in mid 2022.
74% Merlot and 26% Cabernet Franc
Château Canon, a famous St.Emilion property is named after Jacques Kanon who bought the estate in 1760. Since 1996 it has been owned by Chanel, who also owns Château Rauzan-Ségla in Margaux. Located in the centre of the St.Emilion appellation, to the south-west of St-Emilion town, Canon has 18 hectares of vineyards split between the limestone plateau and the clay/loam côtes. They are planted with 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Franc. Vinification is traditional: up to 20 days in temperature-controlled wooden vats followed by 18 months' maturation in oak barrels (70% new). This wine needs cellaring to show at its best and mature Canon reeks of the soft, buttery Merlot grape as only the very top St-Emilions and Pomerols can. It is classified as a 1er Grand Cru Classé (B).
What The Critics Say
98/100 Decanter, Jane Anson
"Sleek, elegant and appealing even before you get your nose near the glass. Aromatically it is deep and rich, and then it revs up and takes off. Dense, compact and intense, zingy limestone vibrancy and grip. Winemakers say they are looking for balance all the time, but here you feel it, with tiny pulses of electricity that appear from beginning to end of the palate. Salinity on the finish with gunsmoke and extremely moreish blueberry and blackberry fruit, with a creamy texture as things open up. 50% new oak. Thomas Duclos consults." Drink 2028 - 2050
17.5+/20 JancisRobinson.com, James Lawther MW
"74% Merlot, 26% Cabernet Franc. Barrel sample. Refined, perfumed nose. Vibrant, juicy fruit with fine texture and tannins. Palate-cleansing finish. Total harmony. Another strong effort from this estate. (JL)." Drink 2027 - 2045
