Its Origins

Domaine Tardieu-Laurent was established in 1994. It is a partnership between Dominique Laurent, a former pattisier (and with the girth to go with it) and one of the hottest names in Burgundy, and Michel Tardieu, a dynamic young winemaker. Tardieu-Laurent is an extremely unusual operation in that they are a négociant only, buying young wines from growers all over the Rhône, which they mature and blend before bottling. They own no vineyards and don't buy grapes, only wine. Tardieu-Laurent is very much an "artisan" producer, making between half a dozen and 20 or so barrels of each wine. The majority of the wines are from the southern Rhône although superb cuvees of Cote Rôtie and Hermitage are also produced. The wines are all aged in small oak casks (often 100% new) and bottled with no fining nor filtration. Michel Tardieu proclaims himself as a confirmed terroirist, insisting that his aim with each appellation is to express powerfully the fruit and sense of place, never masking these factors with wood.

What The Critics Say

93-95/100 Jeb Dunnuck

"I was blown away by the 2017 Vacqueyras Vieilles Vignes. This utterly beguiling 2017 offers a Burgundian, seamless, multi-dimensional style as well as smoking good notes of blackberries, blueberries, black cherries, and lavender. It has the depth of fruit and texture to drink well right out of the gate, but it’s going to evolve gracefully for a decade or more as well."

90-92/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Joe Czerwinski

"Still in wood, the 2017 Vacqueyras Vieilles Vignes is a blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre and 10% Syrah. It was in barrels for a year, then moved into foudres, where it will stay for about eight months. Hints of cinnamon and clove mark the nose, but the dominant impression is of vivid raspberry and cherry fruit. It's medium to full-bodied, with a long, silky finish." Drink 2019 - 2026

16/20 JancisRobinson.com, Jancis Robinson

"Quite a deep crimson. Nose much less frank than the 2017 Rasteau’s. Rich, red-fruit compote and then very readable on the palate – almost ‘cool’! Then it all comes to a skidding halt and suddenly stops delivering fruit on the very drying finish. Difficult to read at the moment but very different from the rest of the southern Rhône 2017s from this producer. Organic. 70% Grenache (over 60 years old), 10% Syrah (40 years old), 20% Mourvèdre (40 years old). 50% destemmed. Fruit from: Sarrians Plateau, La Ponche, Les Grès and Les Pendants. 10 months in one- and two-year-old barrels, then another 10 months in foudres (Tronçais and Allier)." Drink 2022 - 2029
