One of New Zealand's best Chardonnays. Dog Point make a fine and layered wine using indigenous yeast and lees aging, with 18 months in mostly old French oak. This distinctively old world style has always offered the citric, flinty, nutty and mineral focus that few producers have the experience or authenticity to attempt. It has the intensity that Chard drinkers love, but also the cut and complexity to please any serious white drinker. Cellar or decant, and watch it unfold.

Its Origins

Dog Point Vineyard combines the considerable winegrowing experience of Ivan Sutherland and James Healy - both of whom were key players in establishing the quality of Marlborough's Cloudy Bay Vineyard. Their philosophy is total involvement from the vineyard through the winemaking process to marketing regionally distinctive and vineyard expressive wines. Fruit for their wines is sourced from selected vineyard plantings dating back to the late 1970's.

What The Critics Say

96/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Concentrated chardonnay with grapefruit, struck flint, mineral, hazelnut, brioche and spicy oak flavours. Youthful wine that's approachable now and offers cellaring potential. A very classy wine indeed, with subtle complexity and underlying power. 8/10/2017." Drink 2017 - 2022

5 Stars Michael Cooper

"This classy, single-vineyard wine is grown on the south side of the Wairau Valley, hand-picked, fermented and matured for 18 to 20 months in French oak barriques (15 to 25 per cent new), and given a full, softening malolactic fermentation. Bright, light lemon/green, the 2015 vintage (5*) is mouthfilling, concentrated and very youthful, with intense grapefruit-like flavours, showing good complexity, fresh acid spine and a tight, persistent finish. A wine with a powerful presence, it should be at its best 2020+." Drink 2017 - 2027

19.5/20 Raymond Chan

"Deep, integrated aromas of ripe white stonefruits layered with nutty lees and oak notes and complexing gunflint and mineral elements. The aromatics are refreshing with an underlying tautness. Medium-full bodied, the palate has rich and mouthfilling flavours of sweetly ripe white and yellow stonefruits entwined with an amalgam of mealy detail, soft creamy barrel-ferment elements nutty lees and oak, complex gunflint and minerals, revealing some oak toast. The flavours form a concentrated core, and the palate has fresh, lacy acidity providing energy and tension. The wine carries smoothly to a long and sustained finish of stonefruits, nuts, and flint. Match with grilled and roasted seafood, poultry and pork dishes over the next 5-6 years. Approx. two-third Mendoza and one-third clone fruit, from vines dating back to 1981 in age, hand-picked, WBP and directly pressed to barrel, indigenous yeast fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 18 months in 15% new oak with full MLF. 19.5/20 Oct 2017." Drink 2017 - 2023
