Its Origins

A major factor in Riverby’s success is the total control over all grape production on the single estate vineyard. A significant portion of the vineyard consists of vines with considerable age and this is complemented by slightly younger vines utilising modern clones. This combination of vine age and meticulous clonal selection is readily apparent in the high quality fruit being produced. Vines were first planted in 1989; on land that had previously been used for cropping and sheep farming. Further plantings have continued over the years, until now over 70 hectares are planted out in Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Semillon, and Syrah. The most recent planting is of Gruner Veltliner. As part of Riverby’s focus on viticultural excellence, yields are kept very low and several varieties are handpicked. Sustainable grape-growing techniques are practiced throughout the whole grape-growing and winemaking cycle.

What The Critics Say

96/100 Sam Kim

"The wine offers waves of delicious flavours. The fabulously fragrant bouquet shows lemon curd, mango, mandarin and exotic floral notes, followed by a delectable palate that is filled with attractive fruit flavours and appealing sweetness (40 g/l), which is perfectly balanced by juicy acidity. Absolutely gorgeous. At its best: now to 2022. $27.00. www.riverbyestate.com. Nov 2015." Drink 2018 - 2022

91/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Moderately sweet riesling, with obvious honeyed botrytis influence together with passionfruit, mango, citrus and mandarin. Sweetness is supported by fruity acidity and builds some pleasing tension in the wine. 25/1/2017."

4 Stars Michael Cooper

"Instantly appealing, the 2014 vintage (4*) is an estate-grown, Wairau Valley wine, hand-picked from vines planted in 1990. A distinctly medium style (40 grams/litre of residual sugar), it has a slightly honeyed bouquet, leading into a medium to full-bodied wine with strong, ripe, peachy, slightly gingery and honeyed flavours, and a smooth finish."
