2017 Two Paddocks Fusilier Central Otago Pinot Noir

97 Points Huon Hooke
In stock
A premium red from the golden slope or so-called "dress circle" of Central Otago Pinot Noir. Long sought and recently acquired, the Fusilier vineyard is organically managed and situated next to Felton Road in Bannockburn, where the famously warm conditions and free-draining schisty-silt soils produce a wine of remarkable depth and structure. With the ripeness to enjoy now and the legs to cellar a good while, the Fusilier is small volume and top notch. Collect!

Pinot Noir

Its Origins

Founded in 1993 with a small 2ha vineyard in Gibbston Valley, we now have a total of 15 ha with a further two vineyards in the Alexandra Basin. Our focus is primarily on Pinot Noir, but we also produce a small quantity of Riesling. Our Two Paddocks single vineyard wines, First Paddock and Last Chance Pinot Noirs are all estate grown, whilst Picnic, our diminutive second label, is a regional Central Otago blend. We are dedicated to sustainable production, with our vineyards managed under SWNZ certification. Winemaker: Dean Shaw, The Central Otago Wine Company.

What The Critics Say

97/100 Huon Hooke

"Deep red colour with a good purple tint; the bouquet powerful with lots of stemmy whole-bunch character (they use up to 50% for the single vineyard wines). The palate is very deep and fleshy, strongly constructed, plush-textured and powerful. A very striking pinot noir. 23 JAN 2019." Drink 2019 - 2034

96/100 Cameron Douglas MS

"A Proprietor’s Reserve wine with a powerful yet reserved bouquet. Aromas of flowers and sweet thyme, raspberry and sweet strawberry, vanilla, toasty oak and a core of pinosity. Complex and alluring overall. On the palate - tense, youthful, dry, fruity and loaded with energy. Fruit flavours reflect the nose with fresh, ripe and tart versions of cherries and raspberries, red apple skins then roses and thyme. No mistaking the impact of tannins, oak and acidity with an abundance of all three, but not to excess - just enough to show the power of the fruit will see this wine through several cellar years to come. Chalky tannins, new and older oak barrel flavours, long finish, young. Decant for service with best drinking from 2021 through 2027+." Drink 2021 - 2027+

96/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Restrained, taut pinot noir with cherry, floral, violet, mineral, stems, spice and nutty oak flavours. A high-energy wine that's underpinned by bright acidity and a backbone of fine tannins. Needs time 01 DEC 2019." Drink 2019 - 2025
