2019 Bellefont Belcier St Emilion Grand Cru Classe
En Primeur product: order now for arrival mid 2022. This is a serious St Emilion for medium term cellaring. Now owned by Peter Kwok, the estate began in the seventeenth century in a location that nieghbours one of the best estates in the appellation, Tertre Roteboeuf. (Indeed, the family ownership in the 1960s saw the fruit sold under the label Le Tertre.) Now rising in esteem under its own label, Bellefont Belcier is gaining rather extreme critical acclaim for the price. To remove foreign exchange risk for our customers, listed prices are all up final landed cost including GST. Payment is due on invoice/order placement, with delivery in mid 2022.
70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon
Château Bellefont Belcier is a fast progressing St.Emilion property that, under proprietor Jean Labusquière, has come on in leaps and bounds during the last five years or so. Bellefont-Belcier's 12.4 hectares of vineyards are located in the commune of St. Laurent des Combes, south-west of the town of St.Emilion. The wine is typically a blend of 83% Merlot, 10%Cabernet Franc and 7% Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes are fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats and the wine is matured in oak barrels (80% new) for 18 months. During the last 5 years there has been a move at Bellefont-Belcier towards harvesting later in the season as well as a far more rigorous grape selection at harvest time. This has resulted in richer and riper wines. Louis, son of François Mitjavile of Château Tertre Roteboeuf, has played a key role in the revival of this Château's fortunes.
What The Critics Say
94-96/100 Wine Cellar Insider, Jeff Leve
"With pungent aromas of crushed rock and stone in the forefront, the nose quickly moves to the floral side before the red berries, smoke and licorice kick in. Concentrated, with velvet textured, salty tannins and waves of sweet, ripe, fresh berries, the finish really sticks with you. The wine was made from blending 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, reaching 13.95% alcohol. The wine is aged in 40% new French oak barrels with 20% of the wine aging in foudres."
93-95/100 Vinous, Neal Martin
"The 2019 Bellefont-Belcier is inky purple in hue. Cropped at 41hl/ha between 27 September and 14 October and matured in 40% new oak, it offers attractive blackcurrant, bilberry and subtle raisin scents that are impressively defined and focused. There is a “coolness” about these aromatics that I admire. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, gentle grip, very pure fruit with a citrus like freshness. Edgy towards the finish with just a faint graphite-like note emanating from the 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Certainly this is one of the best examples I have tasted from this Saint-Émilion estate." 95-96/100 James Suckling (2018 vintage)
"Intense aromas and flavors of blue fruit and violets. Hints of green tea and black olives. Changes all the time. Medium-to full-bodied with polished and very silky tannins. Love the center palate. The finish lasts for minutes. This year, about one-third cabernet franc gives an edge to the merlot and the touch of cabernet sauvignon."
