2020 Greystone Organic Pinot Gris
After searching the world for the perfect place to grow cool-climate wines, the Thomas family established the Greystone Vineyard on the slopes of the Teviotdale hills in the Waipara Valley in 2004. They planted 39 hectares of the 153 hectare property of predominantly north-westerly facing land, concentrating on matching blocks with clones and varieties. There were many options with a range of altitudes from 60m to 150m above sea level and soil profiles from light clays through to those rich in limestone content. While Pinot Noir makes up over 60% of the plantings they could see the potential for other varieties in the region and planted blocks of Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and even a small block of Syrah.
What The Critics Say
94/100 bob Campbell MW
"Moderately intense pinot gris, with typical ripe pear and honeysuckle flavours together with a savoury, toasty, nutty character from contact with the yeast lees. A smooth-textured and accessible wine with a lingering finish. 02 DEC 2020." Drink 2020 - 2024
94/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim
"A wonderfully styled pinot gris; the elegantly fragrant bouquet shows apricot, fig, poached pear and subtle spice aromas, leading to a concentrated palate that's fabulously textured and lingering. It's pristine and refined with excellent structure and harmony. At its best: now to 2025. $28.00. www.greystonewines.co.nz. Oct 2020." Drink 2020 - 2025
93/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2019 vintage)
"Very attractive bouquet with mineral and white spice, a core of apple, pear and sweet quince. Tense, crisp, fruity and dry with flavours of crushed minerals (quartz) stones, white fleshed tree fruits and citrus juice. Plenty of acidity, generous on the alcohol, a whisper of residual sugar and a lengthy finish. Another great example from the Greystone stable. Drink now and through 2021."
