Its Origins

Dog Point Vineyard combines the considerable winegrowing experience of Ivan Sutherland and James Healy, the former chief viticulturalist and head winemaker at Cloudy Bay. After leaving Cloudy Bay, Ivan and James began making wines from Sutherland's own vineyards, which were planted in the 70's and 80's. Additional fruit is sourced from selected vineyard plantings dating back to the late 1970's. The first vintage with the Dog Point label was 2004, using 2002 fruit. Over 200 hectares of vines are farmed, with sustainable/organic practices.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Intense, appealing pinot noir with subtle floral aromas together with concentrated red berry, dark chocolate, liquorice, wood smoke and spicy oak flavours. Powerful wine with obvious cellaring potential. 14 SEP 2023." Drink 2023 - 2031

94/100 Cameron Douglas Master Sommelier

"Ripe, fruity, varietal and complex bouquet with aromas of red cherry and raspberry flesh, some red licorice and vanilla, layers of wood smoke and plum then a clay stone mineral quality. These ideas repeat and come alive on the palate with youthful polished tannins and acidity for contrast. Dry and delicious with salivating textures and flavours, fresh red fruits and barrel spice highlights and a lengthy finish with complexity and charm." Drink 2023 - 2030

93/100 James Suckling

"Strawberries, cranberries and lavender with orange zest, sweet squash and a hint of tomato leaf. Medium-bodied with refreshing acidity and velvety tannins. Zesty and flavorsome on the palate. Good harmony. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. Screw cap."
