In 1964, Uriel Nielson planted the first commercial vineyard in Santa Barbara County. It was a bold act considering most of the experts deemed our windswept region too cold for grapes. Fortunately, Uriel didn’t heed their warnings and one of the world’s great winegrowing regions was born. Today, five decades later, there are more than 100 wineries and thousands of acres devoted to vines in this cool, coastal, Southern California enclave. Nielson Wines pays homage to its namesake and the founder of this illustrious viticultural region. Each vintage Nielsen produces Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and limited quantities of Rhone-style wines from some of the area’s most celebrated vineyards. Jonathan Nagy, a well-respected winemaker and Santa Maria native with over 15+ years making wines from Santa Barbara County, works in tandem with Ryan Pace, assistant winemaker & enologist, to craft each bottling Chardonnay. Together they use small-lot winemaking techniques, such as hand pruning, block-by-block harvesting, barrel fermentations and lees stirring. All of these precise winemaking and vineyard practices are used to create wines that capture the culture, lifestyle and flavor of Santa Barbara County.
What The Critics Say
93/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Lisa Perrotti-Brown
"Produced from Wente clone vines planted in 1999, the 2015 Chardonnay Nielson Vineyard offers up pronounced grapefruit, lemon curd, green mango and almond notes with wafts of crushed stones and baker’s yeast. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is super intense, with layers of ripe, opulent fruit and a wicked backbone of racy acid, finishing with fantastic length."
