With a perfect score of 100/100 from former Wine Advocate reviewer, Jeb Dunnuck! This is an essential Chardonnay from a small zone in California that some call the "true Sonoma Coast". Located almost two hours north of Russian River on a Sonoma Coast mountain range, here very cool conditions are created by this northerly site's maritime exposure and elevation (about 275 metres). From soils of free-draining sand and volcanic material, the result is a unique presence and elegance with salty mineral poignancy. Profoundly good, this wine will sell out!

Its Origins

Hartford is an estate belonging to the Jackson Family holdings. Hartford’s wines are rare. Year after year, they rank among the most sought-after collectables from California. Since the 1994 vintage, owners Don and Jenny Hartford have built the winery’s reputation on limited-production, handmade, single-vineyard Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs and Old Vine Zinfandels from some of Northern California’s greatest vineyards. Hartford Family Winery is located in the town of Forestville, roughly 15 miles from the Pacific Ocean. This is the heart of the famed Russian River Valley. In addition to their own estate, Hartford harvests fruit from a handful of prized vineyards throughout the Russian River Valley, Green Valley, Carneros, Sonoma Coast and Anderson Valley. These are all high-reputation, low-yielding, sustainably-farmed sites situated in cool-climate sub-regions. Without exception, Hartford’s wines are intense, thought provoking and expressive of both variety and terroir. They have been served at the White House on many occasions and are staples on “Reserve” wine lists around the country. Since 2011, Jeff Stewart, a specialist in Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Zinfandel, has been in charge of winemaking.

What The Critics Say

100/100 Jeb Dunnuck

"Coming from a coastal site just four miles off the Pacific, the 2015 Chardonnay Far Coast Vineyard was barrel fermented and aged 16 months in 43% new French oak. Buttered citrus, lemon, honeysuckle, white flowers, and building, salty minerality all emerge from this awesomely concentrated, deep, layered, and structured Chardonnay. This is a powerhouse. Full-bodied, opulent, concentrated, yet with bright acidity and perfect balance, it's an incredible effort and one of the finest Chardonnays out there."

96-100/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Robert Parker

"As for the 2015 Chardonnay Far Coast Vineyard, this is also from a very cold site, this one north of Fort Ross on the Sonoma coastline. The wine offers oyster shell minerality (or wet gravel), some pineapple, mango and nectarine, beautifully focused, full-bodied flavors, and a burgeoning complexity that is impressive on its own. Drink it over the next 10-12 years." Drink 2016 - 2028

93/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni

"The 2015 Chardonnay Far Coast Vineyard is a distinctly structured, savory wine built more on nuance rather than on overt fruit. Sage, dried apricot and a host of more mineral-notes are laced together in this distinctive Chardonnay. Deceptive in its mid-weight structure, the 2015 packs quite a punch." Drink 2018 - 2022
