A renowned Cabernet from a distinctive and elevated site above the Napa Valley. With a period under vine that goes back to 1888, the La Jota vineyards in the Howell Mountain area are located in a high mountain forest, up to 570 metres above sea level. This cool altitude -- which has less extreme temperature variation, however, being above the fog -- is said to allow grape skins to thicken, augmenting the long and complex flavours. These mature vines also struggle in free-draining volcanic ash and iron-rich red clay soils. A supreme Napa offering, the La Jota is a unique Cabernet to decant now, or cellar for the medium to long term.

Its Origins

La Jota is a property owned by Jackson Family Wines. The La Jota winery has deep roots in Napa Valley’s winemaking history. It was W.S. Keyes who planted the first vines on Howell Mountain back in 1888. Ten years later, and a mile down the road, fellow Howell Mountain pioneer, Frederick Hess, established the La Jota Vineyard — named after the property’s location on the Mexican land grant Rancho La Jota — and built a stone winery which still stands today. Both men won medals for their wines at the Paris Exposition of 1900, which brought instant recognition to Howell Mountain as a world-class wine growing region. Today, La Jota Vineyard Co. proudly carries on this great winemaking tradition by producing small lots of mountain Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc from the winery’s estate vineyard and nearby W.S. Keyes Vineyard. Both sites sit between 1,700 and 1,900 feet in elevation and are surrounded by pine, fir, oak and madrone trees. While growing grapes in the nutrient-lean, volcanic soils of these vineyards is a challenge, the rewards are undeniable. Highly concentrated flavors and muscular tannins slowly mature to perfection, while the cool winds, diurnal temperature swings, and high altitude keep the grape acids impeccably balanced.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Wine Enthusiast

"Blended with small percentages of 12% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, and then aged in 90% new French oak for 19 months, this stellar effort offers reduced oak, bark, toast and clove aromas and flavors alongside sizable, structured tannin and hearty ripeness. Black currant and chocolate dust a layer of tobacco." Drink 2024 - 2034."

92/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni

"Graphite, smoke, incense, lavender, plum and sweet French oak hit the palate in La Jota's 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon. Winemaker Chris Carpenter has done a tremendous job in crafting a Cabernet that is both deeply expressive of Howell Mountain, but with enough sweetness in the tannins and overall juiciness to drink well with minimal cellaring." Drink 2018 - 2026

95+/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Robert Parker (2015 vintage)

"Blended of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8.5% Cabernet Franc, 7.5% Merlot, 6% Malbec and 3% Petit Verdot, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain has a deep garnet-purple color and nose of warm cassis, black berry pie and mulberries with touches of cedar, red roses and cloves plus a touch of cigar boxes. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a great core of black and blue fruit layers framed by firm, ripe tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long. 2,362 cases produced."
