The Akitu A1 was the recipient of numerous awards, including London's International Wine Challenge giving it 96/100 and numerous Trophies (including "New Zealand Pinot Noir" and "New Zealand Red"). With palpable boutique quality, it will drink beautifully now or in a few years hence. This is a nice opportunity to experience this relatively new entrant to the super-quality market.

Pinot Noir

Its Origins

Akitu is the wine of Hawkesbury Estates Limited. We are a family owned vineyard producing exclusively Pinot noir in a variety of clones on an exceptional land holding in the Upper Clutha basin of Central Otago. We planted our 12ha vineyard in 2002/2003 and it produces approx. 60 tonnes of fruit each vintage - the best of which goes to make akitu. Our inaugural 2012 vintage was met with a highly flattering response which has now been complemented with a Gold Medal in the International Wine Challenge for our Akitu A1.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Jamie Goode

“Considering the heat of this vintage, this has turned out really well. This is taut and aromatic with fresh, vivid cherry and raspberry fruit. The palate has a lovely energy, showing bright, elegant red and black cherry fruit with a silky texture: there’s some finesse and a fine herbal quality sitting under the fruit. There’s a lovely fruit quality here, but it blends so beautifully with the more savoury, structural elements. Very fine.”

95/100 Cameron Douglas MS

“Fresh, youthful and fruit centric bouquet with aromas of fresh raspberry and dark cherry, sweet oak and spice to match a toasty barrel scent. Youthful and quietly complex. Tense, youthful and dry on the palate, with a firm and youthful texture, chalky tannins and ripe, almost sweet acid line. Flavours of fruits and spice reflect the nose. Well made and ready to enjoy from today and through 2028.”

94/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

"Outer quote mark Seductively complex and inviting, the bouquet shows dark berry, smoked game, truffle, anise and almond notes, followed by a wonderfully weighted palate delivering fine texture and spicy nuances. It’s flavoursome and generous, while remaining refined and persistent with an elegant velvety finish." Drink 2021 to 2027
