Its Origins

Akitu is the wine of Hawkesbury Estates Limited. We are a family owned vineyard producing exclusively Pinot noir in a variety of clones on an exceptional land holding in the Upper Clutha basin of Central Otago. We planted our 12ha vineyard in 2002/2003 and it produces approx. 60 tonnes of fruit each vintage - the best of which goes to make akitu. Our inaugural 2012 vintage was met with a highly flattering response which has now been complemented with a Gold Medal in the International Wine Challenge for our Akitu A1.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Bob Campbell MW

“Elegant, supple pinot noir with purity and power. Layers of spice and floral flavours with a suggestion of roasted chestnut and a thread of saline and oyster-shell. Restrained with exciting development potential. 28 JAN 2022." Drink 2022 - 2030

94/100 Cameron Douglas MS

“A bouquet loaded with personality and pinosity. Aromas of minerality and dried herb then a core of red berry fruits from red currant to wild raspberry then cherry and red apple. Layers of older wood add complexity and depth. Taut, salivating, fruity and dry on the palate. Firm tannins and acidity are abundant, adding in texture and mouthfeel as well as foundation. Fruit flavours reflect the bouquet. A youthful and engaging wine with energy, charm reflecting place and time. Best drinking from 2023 through 2030."

94/100 Decanter, Ines Salpico

"A truly seductive and intriguing wine, with aromatic depth and layered complexity. The elegant line of acid and fine tannins supports the plush red fruit and broody florality. Hints of graphite, smoke, dried thyme and all-spice uncoil slowly in the glass. In the background, wet leaves and tobacco box add earthy weight." Drink 2023 to 2033
