2016 Vidals 1888 Chardonnay
With a passion to pursue winemaking in his adopted country, Spaniard Anthony Joseph Vidal purchased a Hawkes Bay racing stable in 1905, converted it into a wine cellar, planted vines and established himself as one of New Zealand's early wine innovators. From these pioneering beginnings, Vidal has gone on to create highly-acclaimed wines from one century to the next. The passion that created Vidal over 100 years ago burns just as brightly today, represented by the eternal flame adorning each bottle of Vidal wine. Modern state-of-the-art technology is used in conjunction with traditional winemaking techniques and some original elements of the building are used for Chardonnay fermentation and maturation. The vineyards are farmed with sustainable and organic practices, thanks to winemaker Hugh Crichton’s passion for the environment.
What The Critics Say
96/100 Bob Campbell MW
"Flagship chardonnay from a top producer. 1,600 bottles made. Intense and quite complex chardonnay with grapefruit, citrus, white peach, struck flint, mineral, hazelnut, brioche and bran biscuit flavours. A powerful wine that can be appreciated now but will continue to develop with bottle age. 27/7/2019." Drink 2019 - 2023
97/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim
"Exhibiting precision and poise as well as richness and complexity, this magnificent rendition shows nectarine, grapefruit, toasted almond and oatmeal characters on the nose with a seductive whiff of gun smoke. The palate is impressively concentrated, offering outstanding depth and breath, wonderfully enhanced by refined mouthfeel and flowing texture. It is classically structured by brilliantly pitched acidity, finishing persistent, engaging and gratifying. $120.00. www.vidal.co.nz. July 2019." Drink 2020 - 2028
5 Stars Michael Cooper
"The absolute pinnacle of Vidal Estate', the 2016 vintage is an extremely rare wine. Hand-picked in the Kokako Vineyard, in the Ohiti Valley, the 2016 vintage (5* )was fermented and lees-aged for a year in French oak casks (33 per cent new). From a warm growing season, it has a highly fragrant, complex bouquet, with a hint of gunflint. Bright, light yellow/green, it is very intense and vibrant, with deep, youthful, grapefruit-like flavours, a subtle seasoning of oak, appetising acidity and a lasting finish. Likely to be a 10-year wine, it's well worth cellaring to 2022+."
