Bernard Schoffit is a brilliant pioneer in Alsace’s greatest Grand Cru, Rangen de Thann. The domaine, started by Bernard’s father Robert at 10 hectares, is situated near Colmar. 25 years ago, Bernard, then still very young, embarked on an ambitious program of buying land in Rangen, around the Clos St. Theobold. Totaling nearly 6.5 hectares, a good part of it had been abandoned because it was too steep to work. Through sheer determination and ambition, he has now reclaimed all 6.5 hectares. From these incredibly steep slopes, with incredibly low yields, he is making simply extraordinary wine from each plot he grows. Bernard’s gift for wine-making is not reserved only for his Rangen wines. In his vineyards near Colmar he practices the same rigorous approach to yields. These yields, very old vines, and Bernard’s guiding hand produce wines that are all marked by the following characteristics: intensity, very pure varietal character, great concentration of fruit and richness on the palate, and perfect acidity to balance and carry this weight into a long and brilliant finish. Organic.
What The Critics Say
92/100 Wine Enthusiast, Anne Krebiehl MW
"Flinty, smoky notes of reduction for now cloud the nose, but in an appealing way. Underneath await stirrings of peach and mandarin peel. The palate is equally complex, presenting juicy pear notes, subtle citrus and more of that alluring, earthy smoke. It's an intriguing Gewurztraminer with an off-dry, smooth but fresh finish."
91/100 Vinous, Ian D'Agata (2014 vintage)
"Dark straw-yellow. Explosive aromas and flavors of smoky bacon, flowers and ripe tropical fruit on the long, crystalline finish. Very obviously Gewürz; this is a knockout wine and all the more impressive given that 2014 was especially tough on this variety. Finishes with a peppery zing and a twist of lime. Schoffit’s youngest Gewürz vines are 30 years old, so the average age of their Gewürz vines is 45, and that fact certainly contributes to this wine’s depth. It enters quite sweet (30 g/L residual sugar) but the 6.8 g/L total acidity gives it a lemony brightness, making it seem light, lively and less sweet than it is." Drink 2017 - 2025
Parker's Wine Advocate, Stephan Reinhardt (2015 vintage)
"The intensely citrus colored 2015 Gewurztraminer Lieu-Dit Harth Cuvée Caroline opens with a super ripe and warm, almost baked tropical fruit on the nose. These aromas are intermixed with fresh lemon, smoky and some earthy/stony flavors, as well spicy notes. Full-bodied, lush and round, this is a very rich but elegant and harmonious wine; it has lots of herbal and floral flavors on the palate, a smooth acidity and good tannins. The 2015 tasted significantly sweeter than the 2014, but analytically it's just three grams more of residual sugar and also the alcohol of 13.7% is .9 volume-percent higher. This is a hedonistic but also elegant Gewurztraminer that should be stored for another five to eight years, although it drinks perfect today for those who like this rich, round and sweet style."
