2021 Kumeu River Mate's Vineyard Chardonnay

95 Points Bob Campbell MW
In stock
A single-vineyard icon that is New Zealand Chardonnay at its best! The Mate's is comparable to fine Burgundy in both quality and style, with complexity and mineral acidity integrated seamlessly into it's full-textured body. The West Auckland vineyard itself has gone from a local legend to a world leader thanks to considerable vine age and the mind-boggling expertise of Mate's son, winemaker Michael Brakovich MW. Drink soon or cellar for a good while.

Its Origins

In 1938 Maté Brajkovich arrived in New Zealand with his parents, who settled in Kumeu and in 1944 bought a small vineyard which would later become Kumeu River wines. For a few decades Maté mostly made simple fortified and sparkling wines. It wasn't until 1982 however, when Matés son Michael took over, that the wines would really start to turn heads. Michael and his siblings began to transform the vineyard and vinification practices to more considered, traditional ways, with hand harvesting, improved drainage, judicious use of oak and only using the wild yeast present in the vineyard to bring a sharper definition of terroir into the wines. Matés vineyard is the original land bought in 1944, re-planted by Maté just before his death with low-yielding Mendoza clone Chardonnay in 1990.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Bob Campbell

"Flagship chardonnay from a leading producer of the variety. Lush, concentrated wine with peach, nectarine, sizzled butter, hazelnut and spicy oak flavours. Distinctive and impressive wine with ageing potential. Drink 2022 to 2032."

100/100 James Suckling (2020 vintage)

"This is such impressive chardonnay in terms of power and complexity, delivering so much with such poise. Aromas of lemons and peaches intersect with lightly spicy oak and brioche on the nose. The palate drops mouth-filling flavors of peach and lemon and winds tight, before exploding long on the finish with a long, nutty afterglow. Perfect chardonnay. Drink over the next decade or more. Screw cap."

95/100 Thomas Parker MW (2020 vintage)

"The vines for Mate's Vineyard turned 30 years old for the 2020 vintage here. The Brajkovich family believe this is the highest quality fruit they have ever harvested from this site, the Mendoza clone bringing the perfect blend of smaller, thicker-skinned berries and larger, fresher ones. The fruit is hand harvested and whole bunch pressed before spontaneous fermentation and maturation in Seguin Moreau and Mercurey barrels - of which 30% are new. 1300 cases produced. Bright lemon colour in the glass. Rich and expansive on the nose, bringing the best of Hunting Hill and Coddington together - there is tension and struck match but also rich, heady apricot fruit. The palate is dense and concentrated, oily with peaches, apricot and lemon oil. The volume is held together by a pithy grip and bright, zesty acidity. Complexity comes in waves from spice, succulent fruit and savoury, mineral tones. A structured and harmonious wine, it is an incredibly impressive iteration of Mate's Vineyard."
