93 Points Richard Caro

Craggy's answer to Chardonnay from Chablis: not too heavily oaked and cooler on the palate, with a sophisticated mineral focus. Delicious and food-friendly, this wine doesn't shout but its elegance will satisfy lovers of finer Chardonnay and European-styled whites generally.

Its Origins

Craggy Range began with the desire to create a legacy. When Terry Peabody visited New Zealand in 1997 he was introduced to Steve Smith, MW. Terry sensed an exciting possibility in New Zealand; the exceptional climate and spirit of the people aligned with his own philosophy and desire to cut a new path. He wanted to create wines that would become internationally regarded as New World classics. The two men made an important decision from the beginning - to select and source the best land in the country, and to plant the vines perfectly suited to that soil and climate. The winery - one of the most technically advanced ever built in New Zealand - is known for uncompromising standards and meticulous craftsmanship.

What The Critics Say

Winemaker notes on current 2021 vintage

"Pale lime to pale straw. Instantly you are reminded of the coastal nature of this vineyard, with oyster shell, sea spray and cashew all present in the bouquet. Overall, the mouth feels vibrant and fresh, with lively acidity, but not at the expense of flavour. Fresh lemon curd and supple oak round out a palate that is as delicious as it is refreshing."

94/100 The wine Front, Gary Walsh (2019 vintage)

"Richness of fruit is there, white peach and melon, white flowers, but with a coolness and calm composure. Oak is barely there, and there’s a lovely almond flavour and texture, a little green olive, tight acidity, perhaps some ripe lemon in the mix too. Some flint and firmness, and a particularly good finish, flavour and chalk and citrus zest. It’s a beautiful wine."

95/100 Decanter (2015 vintage)

"Very attractive bouquet with a mix of sea air, pineapple and papaya. The palate follows through with citrus, then yellow fruits, with just enough nuanced oak to notice and carry the structure forward. Poised and very elegant."
