2020 Tony Bish Golden Egg Chardonnay

A totally unique Kiwi Chardonnay. Top fruit from Te Awanga is fermented in a fascinating new device, an egg-shaped concrete vat. This shape creates a plump, rounded Chardonnay due to extra contact with yeast lees. If that's too technical, it's a gorgeously rich, aromatic and distinctive Chardy with hardly even a hint of oak – but oh so delicious. Try this!

Its Origins

Tony Bish is a legend of New Zealand winemaking who spent decades making such iconic wines as Sacred Hill's Rifleman's Chardonnay. Now he is channeling his Chardonnay expertise into his own labels, which he produces in a stylish urban winery he has set up in Napier. Much of his wine is aimed at delivering classy examples of the the rich and creamy, 'old school' style of Chardonnay. But Tony's incredible touch and experience ensures that each wine is balanced and refined — even with all their big, bold appeal. Meanwhile, Tony's ongoing experimentation in style and technique is producing results such as his deliciously un-oaked "Golden Egg" Chardonnay, and his super premium "Zen" Chardonnay, which is made in an incredible egg-shaped oak vessel.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2019 vintage)

"A complex and layered bouquet with very specific and distinctive aromas of tension and poise, a mineral and fruit core contrasted by delicate floral leesy coil. Fine, complex and layered on the palate lead by texture and tension, fine lees and fruit tannins, acidity and wonderful heartbeat of style. Fruit flavours of grapefruit and white peach, apple and pith. Very lengthy finish with complexity, definition, texture and purity. If you are a fan of Chablis then this wine will impress with its fine oyster shell flick right on the finish. Best drinking upon release and through 2026." Drink 2021 - 2026

94/100 Bob Campbell MW (2019 vintage)

"Intense, tangy chardonnay with pronounced citrus, grapefruit, white peach and nutty yeast lees flavours that are supported with bright, fresh acidity. A deliciously drinkable wine—a serious chardonnay."

95/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim (2019 vintage)

"The wine was fermented in the first New Zealand-made concrete egg-shaped fermenters which provide greater lees exposure to wine. This stylish chardonnay, made from Mendoza clones, exhibits supremely elegant bouquet with white stone fruit, rockmelon, lemon pith and brioche characters as well as nuances of vanilla and almond. The palate delivers outstanding fruit concentration and purity, wonderfully enhanced by flowing mouthfeel and fine texture, leading to an extremely long, linear finish. At its best: 2017 to 2025. $35.00. www.tonybishwines.co.nz. June 2016."
