92 Points Richard Caro

An organic take on this rare variety in NZ. Instead of aiming for the heavy Californian style, Stonecroft use the moderate heat of Gimblett Gravels to make this sun-loving grape into a red that's fresh, bright and spicy. A vibrant example and a nice sidestep for Zin enthusiasts, it's also something different for any fan of the Gravels. Small volume and rare in retail, to drink or cellar...

Its Origins

The first winery to be established in the Gimblett Gravels Wine growing District, Stonecroft is a small boutique winery owned by Dermot McCollum and Andria Monin, who bought the property in 2010 and live on the Roy’s Hill Vineyard with their two children. Stonecroft is well known for its Syrah, Zinfandel, Gewürztraminer and Chardonnay wines, and has the claim for the oldest Syrah vines in the country! Only organic practices are used and both the two original vineyards and the winery are fully certified organic with AsureQuality. The third vineyard is in conversion to organic status. Total production is small, with only 2,000 to 2,500 cases produced annually.

What The Critics Say

93/100 and rated Excellent, Cameron Douglas MS (2019 vintage)

"Known as Primitivo in Italy and Crljenak kaštelanski in Croatia - Zinfandel is grown in California and New Zealand (among other countries). This example has aromas of fresh cherries and boysenberries, crushed blackberries and black plums. There’s plenty of barrel smoke and wood aromas with vanilla and baked coconut scents. Very youthful, very inviting. On the palate - plush, fruity, youthful, tense and dry. Flavours mirror the nose with ripe fruits then a transition into slightly tarter expressions of the same - this would be classic in northern Californian versions as well - bringing greater palate expression and mouthfeel. Plenty of youthful acidity with moderate tannins. A fine example, warm, generous and tasty. Perfect alternative to Merlot and some Pinots Noir. Drink upon purchase and through 2025+." 4 Stars Michael Cooper (2018 vintage)

"Certified organic, the 2018 vintage (4*) was estate-grown at Roys Hill, hand-picked from vines planted in 1993 and aged for 16 months in American oak casks. Bright ruby, with a fresh, spicy bouquet, it is a lively, medium-bodied red, with ripe berry, plum and spice flavours, showing some complexity, and supple tannins. Already enjoyable, it’s a drink now or cellaring proposition."

92/100 Bob Campbell MW (2015 vintage)

"Elegant zinfandel that's a far cry from the big, jammy Californian monsters that I am more familiar with. However, it does have typical cranberry flavours and a generous oak influence with a spicy finish. Still a tad too youthful but should develop well. 26/5/2017"
