2020 Planeta Etna Rosso

An alluring style that is capturing the world's attention. This red from the banks of Mount Etna on Sicily gains complexity from the rocky, free-draining and mineral-rich volcanic soils. Here the local Nerello Mascalese grape ripens late in elevated vineyards, where delicate fruit characters capture every detail of fruit and mineral layering without any flavour being 'cooked out', as in hotter areas. Widely compared to Burgundy in poise and precision, it offers the paradox of complex but simple charm in a food-friendly, minerally and refreshing red.

Its Origins

"Diego Planeta, along with Giacomo Rallo of Donnfugata and Lucio Tasca d’Almerita, is one of the three founding fathers of the “Sicilian wine renaissance” sparked 10 to 15 years ago. Cousins Francesca, Santi and Alessio Planeta hold the reigns to the estate today and have developed one of the most innovative and modern wine entities in Italy (they are among the most “liked” wineries on Facebook). The Planeta family boasts a gifted hand in marketing and their hard work has only helped to develop the “Sicily” brand within the many foreign markets they penetrate." What The Critics Say

92/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Monica Larner (2019 vintage)

"The Planeta 2019 Etna Rosso is primary and less formal overall but still very true to the classic fundamentals of an Etna red. The bouquet is immediate in its delivery of wild rose, cassis and dried raspberry. It's no surprise that those distinctive volcanic tones of dry ash and earth also play a leading role. This Rosso is lean and streamlined with nice freshness to conclude. Serve it with a classic Sicilian pasta alla Norma (tomato, eggplant and ricotta salata). Some 53,000 bottles were made."

92/100 Wine Enthusiast (2019 vintage)

"Bright and savory, this has alluring scents of fragrant blue flowers, wild red berries and Mediterranean brush. On the polished, racy palate, supple tannins and vibrant acidity accompany juicy red cherry, blood orange, star anise and a tangy mineral note evoking rusty nail."
