2020 Planeta Cerasuolo di Vittoria (Red Label)

90 Points Antonio Galloni's Vinous
In stock
A suave and modern version of this classic Sicilian red. Cerasuolo di Vittoria has a distinguished history and remains the only Sicilian wine recognised by Italy's highest DOCG status. The name Cerasuolo describes the 'cherry-like' nature of this aromatic style, where the local Frappato grape gives the red fruit and fresh mineral acidity while the Nero D'Avola frames it with a touch of colour and structure. Like its northern neighbour Etna, Cerasuolo has lately won kudos from international connoisseurs for its Burgundy-like poise, structure and aromatic appeal. This charming entry-priced example is really beautiful value.
$29.99 in mixed 6+ or $33.99 per bottle

Usually about 60% Nero D'Avola and 40% Frappato

Its Origins

"Diego Planeta, along with Giacomo Rallo of Donnfugata and Lucio Tasca d’Almerita, is one of the three founding fathers of the “Sicilian wine renaissance” sparked 10 to 15 years ago. Cousins Francesca, Santi and Alessio Planeta hold the reigns to the estate today and have developed one of the most innovative and modern wine entities in Italy (they are among the most “liked” wineries on Facebook). The Planeta family boasts a gifted hand in marketing and their hard work has only helped to develop the “Sicily” brand within the many foreign markets they penetrate." Parker's Wine Advocate, Monica Larner

What The Critics Say

90/100 Vinous, Eric Guido

"The 2020 Cerasuolo is dark and smoky, with black currants and crushed berries offset by a hint of animal musk. This is a soft and pure yet energetic expression, with a mix of tart wild berries and sour citrus notes adding tension. It tapers off long and floral, with a pleasant inner sweetness complicated by a staining of salty minerals. This is so incredibly fresh. The 2020 Cerasuolo di Vittoria is a blend of 60% Nero d’Avola and 40% Frappato." Drink 2022 - 2026

91/100 Decanter, Michaela Morris (2017 vintage)

"No oak to compete with the Nero d’Avola and Frappato fruit: raspberry, strawberry and red plum notes burst forth, rosehip and fennel add nuance. Light on its feet, soft tannin, joyfully mouthfilling."
