2021 Pegasus Bay Waipara Pinot Noir
Grape
Pinot Noir
Its Origins
Located in arguably New Zealand's most exciting wine region of North Canterbury (more specifically, Waipara), albiet sparsely scattered with wine estates it is at the forefront of interesting and unique wines in NZ. This is due in part to a fabulous free-draining, well protected terroir. Pegasus Bay is run by the Donaldson family who were pioneers in the region and have been involved with local grape growing and winemaking since the 1970's. The whole family are involved in the process from grape to bottle, and a deep respect for the land, with a long term view towards vine and soil health typifies the Donaldson Family's approach to grape growing. Pegasus Bay is an accredited member of the NZWG sustainable viticulture program and are firm believers of using natural methods to combat pests and diseases rather than the application of unnecessary pesticides and herbicides.
What The Critics Say
96/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim
"Splendidly complex and sensually appealing, the wine shows dark plum, rich floral, dried mushroom and toasted nut aromas. The palate is equally satisfying with outstanding weight and generously textured mouthfeel, finishing superbly long and expansive. The wine offers layers of complex, delectable flavours, making it hugely appealing. At its best: now to 2035. www.pegasusbay.com. June 2023." Drink 2023 - 2035
95/100 Bob Campbell MW
"Intense pinot noir with cassis, blackberry, black cherry, spicy oak, dark chocolate and ripe plum flavours. Bold wine with appealing purity and nicely layered flavours that linger long after the wine has been swallowed. Accessible now but should age well 28 JUN 2023." Drink 2023 - 2031
94/100 or 18.5/20 Raymond Chan Reviews, Candice Chow
"Deep ruby-red with a purple hue, lighter on the rim. The nose is gently full, with aromas of cherry, blackberry, herb and earth. Medium-full bodied, aromas of black cherry and blackberry entwined with thyme, liquorice, black pepper, dark cocoa and earthy undertone. The wine is dark-toned and mouth-filling with a fine-grained tannin framework, reflecting dark cocoa and spice. Balance and lively acidity cut through the richness and carry a lengthy, rich finish. This rich and fine-grained Pinot Noir persists a savoury lingering. Match with mushroom risotto and grilled lamb over the next 8+ years. Fermented with 40% whole bunches, cold soaked for a few days, naturally fermented to 13% alc, aged in oak barriques for 15 months, 40% new oak. 18.5+/20 pts (94 pts) July 2023." Drink 2023 - 2031+
