This wine put Waipara Pinot Noir on the map. Succulent dark berries with savoury herbs and spice offer a benchmark expression of Kiwi Pinot, while fine acids and tannins give an approachable but long-lived balance. A classic, this wine is never short of excellent. Age or drink now.

Pinot Noir

Its Origins

Located in arguably New Zealand's most exciting wine region of North Canterbury (more specifically, Waipara), albiet sparsely scattered with wine estates it is at the forefront of interesting and unique wines in NZ. This is due in part to a fabulous free-draining, well protected terroir. Pegasus Bay is run by the Donaldson family who were pioneers in the region and have been involved with local grape growing and winemaking since the 1970's. The whole family are involved in the process from grape to bottle, and a deep respect for the land, with a long term view towards vine and soil health typifies the Donaldson Family's approach to grape growing. Pegasus Bay is an accredited member of the NZWG sustainable viticulture program and are firm believers of using natural methods to combat pests and diseases rather than the application of unnecessary pesticides and herbicides.

What The Critics Say

Winemaker notes on current 2020 vintage

"Upon release the wine has a bright ruby hue. The nose is layered and complex, with earthy notes of undergrowth, woodsmoke, truffle and pot pourri juxtaposed against dark cherry, cranberry, crushed lavender, and hints of clove. In the mouth the wine is generously proportioned, polished tannins and a seam of refreshing acidity tap dancing cheekily across on a broad silky palate. Fresh and vibrant yet concentrated, with a structured frame. The finish is spicy, decadent, and sustained, leaving lingering impressions of velvety depth. Settled weather over flowering provided a healthy fruit set, which was then thinned back to desired levels. The ensuing summer was dry with very little rain, resulting in perfectly ripened small berries full of intense flavour and concentration. Thankfully, our harvest was able to proceed during the C-19 lockdown, and an unbroken autumn full of warm days meant each variety was picked at its optimum ripeness."

96/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim (2019 vintage)

"Gorgeously styled and seductively complex with dark berry, smoked game, walnut and spicy oak characters with a lovely floral overtone. The concentrated palate offers outstanding power and drive, together with refined mouthfeel and graceful texture, finishing impressively long and expansive. At its best: now to 2034. $54.00. www.pegasusbay.com. Aug 2021."

95/100 Bob Campbell MW (2019 vintage)

"Made with 40% whole-bunches. Spent 18 months in French oak barriques (40% new). Complex pinot noir that is a little closed at this stage, although it opened up as it sat in the glass. Dark berry, cassis, violet, mixed spice, new leather and spicy oak flavours supported by firm, ripe tannins. 02 JUL 2021."
