2020 Neudorf Rosie's Chardonnay

Its Origins
Nelson is the sunniest viticultural region in New Zealand. Relatively isolated, it has never developed into large scale production but several wineries have established an excellent reputation for quality. Prime amongst these is Neudorf, created by pioneers Tim & Judy Finn back in the late 1970s. The winery buildings have developed steadily since 1980, and so has the reputation of this excellent producer specialising predominantly in chardonnay and pinot noir. Their flagship wines are designated by the subregion of Moutere. The Neudorf estate, lying on a mix of glacial outwash clay, now represents 12ha, though buys in fruit from a further 30ha (of managed vineyards). The viticulture is sustainable "lutte raisonnée" with organic practices being introduced since 2008. The wines are all made with minimal intervention; hand harvesting, wild yeast, low S02 and soft, supporting oak.
What The Critics Say
97/100 Bob Campbell MW
Delicious, finely-nuanced chardonnay with grapefruit, citrus, stone fruit, ginger, oyster-shell and baguette crust flavours. A taut, nervy wine, with a delicious backbone of fruity acidity helping to drive a lengthy, mouth-watering finish. 21 NOV 2021." Drink 2021 - 2028
94/100 The Wine Front, Mike Bennie
"The crisp, crystalline version of all the chardonnay from Neudorf, this one is flint, smoke, saline minerality, struck match and green apple crunch. Decent bit of limey acidity here too, some white peach notes faintly there, but that cut and thrust is the main deal. Tight, tense, refreshing. A filigreed version of chardonnay with high drinkability, zing and coolness. This is a great drink" Drink 2022 - 2030
95/100 and rated Excellent, Cameron Douglas MS (2019 vintage)
"This is a barrel ferment expression and with just 8% new French -in total- used the emphasis is on purity, vine age and refinement with a bouquet voice on site first, a core of fruit second and fine judicious use of oak third. A lovely soft creamy texture on the palate with flavours of fresh orchard fruits and citrus then a youthful squeeze of acidity a lite salty edge. The oak, acidity and alcohol provide a sound foundation and there's a fine spice with an equally fine savoury edginess adding complexity and depth. Delicious."
