A sleeper legend in Kiwi Gris. Once people try it, they usually go back because it is always so distinctive, with lush stone fruit against fresh acidity along with a unique salty-mineral undertow in the flavours. Sourced partly from one of New Zealand's strangest vineyards — on the tiny island of Ponui, just off the coast of Waiheke — this wine is packed with interest and X factor.

Pinot Gris

Its Origins

First planted in 1993, at the eastern end of Waiheke Island, Man O’ War consists of 150 acres of vines planted in 76 individual hillside blocks, each with a distinct soil profile and microclimate. Every single block bears the footprints, and sometimes the names, of those who transformed Man O’ War’s rugged hillsides into a spectacular patchwork of vines. Helmed by winemaker Duncan McTavish and vineyard manager Matt Allen, the wines represent a legacy of preservation and great respect for the land and its history.

What The Critics Say

94/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2019 vintage)

"There’s no mistaking the aromas and intensity of fresh green pear, honeysuckle and wild flowers, a salty sea air moment and leesy baked goods bouquet. On the palate - flavours of white fleshed tree fruits and Asian pear, poached apple with a hint of lager and spices of ginger, white pepper and salt. Off-dry to medium style with contrasting acidity, pure varietal flavours and equally intense as the nose suggests, focused and concentrated, warming alcohol and weighty textured finish. Well made and ready to enjoy."

93/100 Bob Campbell MW (2019 vintage)

"Powerful wine from grapes grown on two islands with ripe pear, honey, root ginger, musk and grapefruit marmalade flavours. A strong sweet-and-sour influence creates energy and tension giving the wine a dynamic dimension. 05 MAR 2020." Drink 2020 - 2025

95/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim (2017 vintage)

"Powerful and sumptuous, this is reminiscent of a top-notch Alsace pinot gris. Gorgeous aromas of baked pear, mango, honey, warm spice and potpourri lead to a concentrated palate that is plush and delicious. It is wonderfully textured and magnificently fruited, brilliantly enhanced by elegant sweetness and juicy acidity, finishing persistent and creamy. Grapes were grown on their estate vineyards in Waiheke and Ponui Islands. Style: Medium. May 2018."
