2020 Grasshopper Rock Central Otago Pinot Gris
Grasshopper Rock is one of the world’s southern most vineyards, established in 2003 and dedicated exclusively to pinot noir. The vineyard is situated on Earnscleugh Road, across the Clutha River from Alexandra. The site enjoys high sunshine hours by day and very cool temperatures by night and is sufficiently harsh and difficult to make the vines work their hardest. With extremes of heat and cold comes the risk of spring and autumn frosts, providing a demanding but rewarding environment for the production of premium pinot noir.
What The Critics Say
94/100 and rated #1 of 42 Pinot Gris, Bob Campbell MW
"A new label for this (once) pinot noir specialist. Intense, gently aromatic pinot gris with tree fruit, pear, honeysuckle, ginger and a suggestion of saline-mineral character. A tiny hint of sweetness is balanced by fruity acidity and fine tannins 05 NOV 2020." Drink 2020 - 2024
4.5 Stars The Wine Writer, Angie Atkinson
"Taken from two Central Otago vineyards, the fruit was destemmed, crushed, and then pressed, this technique gives the finished wine a touch of phenolics, creating texture and increasing its food matching potential. The juice is then fermented stainless steel tanks. An almost creamy pale yellow colour with dynamic aromas of sweet pear, red apple, vanilla, and white flowers with a hint of fleshy stone fruit. The aromas continue onto the richly textured palate with ripe pear and baked apple leading the way to a lingering spicy finish. A perfect match for steamed green lipped mussels in a white wine and chipotle sauce."
