2020 Elephant Hill Le Phant Rouge
Usually a Merlot dominant blend
Reydan and Roger Weiss first fell in love with the beauty of Te Awanga when visiting from Germany in 2001. Together they envisaged owning a state-of-the-art winery, merging the traditional values of wine making with an innovative approach and contemporary style to produce exceptional wines to savour and enjoy. With the majestic elephant as their namesake and nestled against a backdrop of rolling hillsides, Elephant Hill spans over 25 hectares of vineyards producing classical, aromatics whites and world-class reds, helmed by winemaker Steve Skinner.
What The Critics Say
94/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim
"Gorgeously ripe and complex, showing blackcurrant, dark plum, violet, olive and subtle cedar characters on the nose. The concentrated palate is both refined and powerful, delivering excellent depth and richness backed by plenty of fine tannins, finishing persistent and satisfying. At its best: now to 2030. $26.00. www.elephanthill.co.nz. March 2022." Drink 2022 - 2030
93/100 Cameron Douglas MS
"This red belnd made with merlot, syrah, tempranillo and malbec - offers aromas of boysenberry and plum, mixed berry compote, violet and a whisper of dark chocolate. Oak, toasty aromas and baking spices add depth and on the palate a velvet mouthfel. PLenty of acidity to contrast a core of fruit flavours that mirror the bouquet. Balanced, well made and ready to drink from day of purchase and through 2026." Drink 2022 - 2026
18.5/20 Raymond Chan Reviews, Candice Chow
"Full, deep ruby-black, slightly lighter on the rim, youthful in appearance. This has a sweet, welcoming bouquet packed with plums, blackcurrants, red berries entwined with herb and a hint of currant leaf, along with sweet vanilla and spice. Medium-full bodied, succulent aromas of red plums, cassis and red berries enriched by vanilla, clove and currant leaf. The wine has a good depth of flavour; finely extracted tannins provided a smooth-grained mouthfeel added complexity. The fruit is succulent and sweet-scented, youthful with great energy. This is a crowd-pleaser with juicy fruit, spice on a velvety mouthfeel and a sustained finish. Match with barbeque beef short ribs over the next 6-8 years. A blend of 41% Merlot, 24% Syrah, 18% Tempranillo, 12% Malbec, 3% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc, Merlot base vinified in tank with minimal oak ageing, with other varieties in seasoned barrels, 13.5% alc. 18.5/20 pts (93 pts) Mar 2022 RRP $26."
