Astrolabe Winemaker Simon Waghorn has this to say about Durvillea: “All along Marlborough’s coast, clinging to rocks at low tide is the seaweed Durvillea. We know it as bull kelp or rimurapa. As a young man at university I studied seaweed. Named for the captain of the Astrolabe, Durvillea seaweed is my quintessential emblem of our wild coast. The Durvillea grapes are grown in the Waihopai, Wairau and Awatere Valleys of Marlborough. The grapes are harvested at precisely the right moment and I preserve the purity and intensity of flavour in my winemaking. Durvillea is Astrolabe’s little sister label. This provides us with the opportunity to offer another range of classic Marlborough wines from our Astrolabe vineyards.”
What The Critics Say
Winemaker notes on current 2020 vintage
"A soft peach colour with a golden hue. A pretty, aromatic nose with notes of pomegranate molasses, red delicious toffee apple, strawberry conserve and crab apple jelly.A round mouthfeel, with a smooth and ethereal texture. This wine is bone dry with delicately balanced acidity. Perfect as an aperitif. Pairs well with halloumi or goat’s cheese salads, or lightly grilled fish and seafood, and melon with prosciutto."
4 Stars Michael Cooper (2019 vintage)
"Offering great value, the 2019 vintage, grown in the Awatere Valley, is a 50:50 blend of Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. Bright, light pink, it is crisp and lively, with good body, strong watermelon and spice flavours, and a crisp, fully dry finish.”
89/100 Bob Campbell MW (2019 vintage)
“Pale, delicate rosé with crushed strawberry, raspberry, vanilla and subtle spice flavours. A bright, fresh wine in an off-dry style. Fine chalky tannins on the finish. Offers very good value at this price.”
