2020 Cune (Cvne) Rioja Monopole Blanco

90 Points Antonio Galloni's Vinous
In stock
A delicious new white label from Cune. Actually, the iconic "Monopole" wine is not new — it is the oldest existing white wine label in Spain, having been released since as far back as 1915. It is made in a traditional style with 100% Vuira warm-fermented and then raised in steel tanks. Refreshing but with a good bit of texture and flavour, the Cune Monopole is a steal for the price.

Its Origins

The Cune label now occupies the mid-range of the Cvne hierarchy, but the name is based in the family's orginal hometown of Haro, Rioja Alta. It was there that Cvne were established in 1879 by the Real de Asúa brothers, Eusebio and Raimundo, and over the decades they became and remained one of Rioja's most reliable sources of high quality wine. Soon comprising three bodegas (Asua de Real, Cune and Contino) they maintained the distinctiveness of each, with the Cune label's stylistic integrity built around a balance of old and new style Rioja: clean, juicy fruit with oak influence and ageworthy acid and tannin structure.

What The Critics Say

90/100 Vinous, Josh Raynolds

"Pale, green-tinged straw. Racy, sharply focused citrus and orchard fruit aromas pick up floral and tarragon nuances with air. Taut and focused on the palate, offering lemon pith, yellow apple and nectarine flavors that deepen through the back half. Closes smooth, with very good tenacity, leaving honeysuckle and peach pit notes behind." Drink 2022 - 2025

16.5/20 and rated Good Value Jancis Robinson MW (2019 vintage)

"Full screwcapped bottle 1,165 g. Famous, well-established brand (since 1915!) that's almost ubiquitous in Spain. 'Produced mainly from hand picked Viura grapes.' Very pale straw. Nice hint of waxiness that I seek in a white rioja as well as freshness. Really mouth-filling with much more weight than some other young white riojas. Proudly Spanish in style! More personality than a cold-fermented young dry white. GV."

92/100 James Suckling (2019 vintage)

"Sliced lemon with some salty, stone and apple undertones. It’s medium-bodied with lovely fruit and a fresh, creamy finish. Drink now."
