Craggy Range began with the desire to create a legacy. When Terry Peabody visited New Zealand in 1997 he was introduced to Steve Smith, MW. Terry sensed an exciting possibility in New Zealand; the exceptional climate and spirit of the people aligned with his own philosophy and desire to cut a new path. He wanted to create wines that would become internationally regarded as New World classics. The two men made an important decision from the beginning - to select and source the best land in the country, and to plant the vines perfectly suited to that soil and climate. The winery - one of the most technically advanced ever built in New Zealand - is known for uncompromising standards and meticulous craftsmanship. Richard and Linda Avery's site is located in the famous stony soils of the old Omaka River bed, in the heart of Marlborough's Wairau Valley.
What The Critics Say
Winemaker notes on current 2020 vintage
"Pale lime to pale straw. An abundance of fresh passionfruit pulp
and freshly grated lemon zest lift from the glass. The palate has a
phenomenal acid drive. There is a concentration of ripe fruit here
only seen in the best of years but enough minerality to give the
wine complex and intrigue- one of our best releases to date. Food match: Sashimi, bluff oysters and trout risotto.
Cellaring: 1 to 4 years from vintage.
4 Stars Michael Cooper (2018 vintage)
"The attractive 2018 vintage (4*) is a mouthfilling, dry wine with passionfruit and lime flavours, tight and lingering. Showing good vibrancy and delicacy, it is freshly scented and youthful."
