2020 Astrolabe Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc
Astrolabe was created in 1996 by winemaker Simon Waghorn, the culmination of a career that began in South Australia in 1982. Winemaking later led Simon and his family from Te Kauwhata to Gisborne, where he specialised in Chardonnay, and eventually to Marlborough where in 1996 he and his wife Jane Forrest-Waghorn joined with old friends Paul Davenport and Sally Lewis to have a go at their own label…and so began Astrolabe. Today they work with a number of growers scattered all over Marlborough, from Awatere valley to the Kekerengu coast to the Wairau Valley, developing a wide portfolio of iconic wines that celebrate the varieties and terroirs of Marlborough.
What The Critics Say
94/100 and rated Excellent, Cameron Douglas MS
"Classic bouquet and palate with flavours of tropical fruits and apple, lemon pith and peach tea, fresh herbs of sage and basil. The core of fruit and minerality are accentuated by sweet acidity and its palate refreshing qualities. Well made, lengthy, harmonious and ready.” Drink 2020 - 2025+
94/100 Bob Campbell MW
"Lively, crunchy, creamy-textured sauvignon blanc with green capsicum, lemongrass, passionfruit and a suggestion of tree fruit flavours with a touch of matchstick. A perfectly-balanced wine with a lengthy finish 02 DEC 2020." Drink 2020 - 2025
4.5 Stars Michael Cooper
"The 2020 vintage is a regional blend, grown mostly in the Awatere valley, with smaller parcels from Kekerengu, the Wairau Valley and the Southern Valleys. Bright, light lemon/green, it is fresh and full-bodied, with tropical-fruit and herbaceous fllavours, showing very good intensity, and a fully dry finish.”
