2021 Astrolabe Marlborough Pinot Gris
Astrolabe was created in 1996 by winemaker Simon Waghorn, the culmination of a career that began in South Australia in 1982. Winemaking later led Simon and his family from Te Kauwhata to Gisborne, where he specialised in Chardonnay, and eventually to Marlborough where in 1996 he and his wife Jane Forrest-Waghorn joined with old friends Paul Davenport and Sally Lewis to have a go at their own label…and so began Astrolabe. Today they work with a number of growers scattered all over Marlborough, from Awatere valley to the Kekerengu coast to the Wairau Valley, developing a wide portfolio of iconic wines that celebrate the varieties and terroirs of Marlborough.
What The Critics Say
92/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2020 vintage)
"Fresh and fruity with aromas of fragrant spices, ripe green and brown pear, apples and sweet lemon. Dry on the palate with a core of fruit showcasing lemon and apple then pear and spice. Plenty of acidity and finely textured mouthfeel round out the wine adding length and complexity. Well made and ready to enjoy upon purchase and through 2023.” Drink 2021 - 2023
18/20 Joelle Thomson (2020 vintage)
“Simon Waghorn is one of Marlborough best’s known winemakers and for good reason. He rocks when it comes to making great whites and this one is a blend of grapes from three sub-regions in Marlborough; Awatere (73%), Waihopai (17%) and Kekerengu (10%). Loads of fruit thinning in the vineyard provided grapes with super-rich concentrated flavours, which were then cool-fermented to make a dry wine with fresh white fruit aromas and a long, soft finish - delicious.”
91/100 Bob Campbell MW (2020 vintage)
"Delicately luscious, dry pinot gris with ripe pear, stewed apple, clove, spice, floral and honeysuckle flavours. A flavoursome wine with a pleasingly rich and moderately smooth texture. 05 MAY 2021." Drink 2021 - 2024
